RA is a pathological form of autoimmune arthritis where in the body literally attacks itself, causing inflammation and terrible trauma to the joints of the spine, hip, shoulder, hand, wrist and sacroiliac, among other notable locations. In the case of rheumatoid arthritis, drugs currently on the market block the body's uptake of the inflammation causing enzyme. Rheumatoid arthritis affects around one in 50 people in the UK, with gouty arthritis affecting one in 200. Drugs currently on the market can cause infrequent but severe side effects. According to Versus Arthritis, over 430,000 adults in the UK currently have RA, with diagnoses most prevalent between the ages of 40 and 60; however, all ages can be affected. Over recent years evidence has been accumulating that overuse of painkillers is problematic and doesn’t necessarily "cure" the pain. Many doctors believe that susceptibility to the condition might be hardwired into the genetic code, yet no definitive evidence of this speculation has been produced in objective research.
